As soon as I saw that pic, I knew it was elm, the thinner parts of the dead trees do not punk when standing, and I found some other odd things with the upper portions of these trees, I had cut up part of a big limb and left a few pieces on the ground, for years, before more fell and I had to really get in there and clean it up along the hedgerow, none of the pieces were punked or rotted, and it was on the ground, 6" diameter or so. It appeared to me that somehow it weathered and protected itself, certain diameters of this seems to stay intact, but the trunk and or thicker parts seem to punk or partially punk, when dry it still burns the same though. I have more of this than I can haul in right now, just died, going to put chains on my 850 ford tractor along with my heavy weight on the back and loaded tires, might work if the snow does not get too deep, + a bunch of tall maples came down, I could really get ahead once I get them gathered up.
Its really funny you posted that, I see all kinds of odd things in wood, and or what could be misconstrued as some kind of art work, some examples of these are taking up space in a corner in the basement, now if I could just find that Rembrandt and sell it off for a large sum LOL !!!!
We could really get them to think we're nuts here on YT, start posting photos of your favorite hunks of firewood, start a trend like the pet rock in the 70's LOL !!!
