Sometimes they have a hard time finding used cars that haven't been beat to death or don't have a zillion miles on 'em. If they get a clean one they can do well and use it to hold money on new ones without being jerks kinda "I can't do that on a new one but this hardly used....." That way they're not saying NO but giving you a choice, pay a little more or consider this other, older car. The last sale I did for our County I was selling two 2005 Tauruses (Taurusi?) and two 2006 Malibus. I knew 2 of our employees were wanting a Taurus, one could only afford the car if it went for the reserve and not a penny more, the other wanted to upgrade from the Taurus she bought from the county 5 years earlier. For some reason the Tauruses went for about $2,000 more than I figured they would. I knew all the cars went for more money than the one employee could afford to spend, the other bought one of the Malibus for less than either of the Tauruses sold for. They grabbed their new used car before I got the spare key and keyless fob to the auctioneer, so I took it to her the next workday. She bought the Malibu AND sold her old Taurus to the other employee at the sale. Sometimes it works out right if the buyer and seller are honest and talk to each other. Neither of these people got what they went to the sale for but both left happy.
