We had an IH 656 Hydro for a few years- stay away from that model-it'll cook you in the field. It was a utility model with a loader. We never had any trouble with it, but wasn't real friendly for field work. The higher row crop types are a different story. You are not right behind the engine and transmission. As far as repairs, we never had any needed, but I heard they could be costly, but then again it can't be any worse than the trany on my 6400. I lost a gear in it around 7000 hours and it cost over $4K fo a patch job. The power shift JD's are pretty much bullet proof, but give you gear like link ups. Somewhere around the --40 or 50 series they went from an 8 speed to about 13 or 15 speeds. Personally, I believe I'd just as soon stay with the older model tractors before the 6 and 7000 series for ease in working on them. I like the newer cabs better, but they are a PITA to work on. They were designed by a mad Bavarian puzzle maker in Europe or Slobovia somewhere. "Let's see how much chit we can cram into how small a space," was their motto.....
