: : I recently changed the hydraulic fluid in my JD1010 and have noticed the pump making more noise than usual. The manual says to use 10W SAE, the parts man at John Deere says SAE would mess up the seals and suggested I use JD HY-GUARD. With this noise I dont know who to believe. Should I stick with the HY-Guard or switch to something else? Thanks

: I own a JD 4010 and it has hydraulic brakes, and I assume a JD 1010 does as well. When I bought the tractor the brakes would not work well. I spent some time troubleshooting the problem and found the brakes worked well with the Hy-Guard. I suggest you purchase the JD fluid instead. The noise you hear is due to air in the pump. The pump is "closed center" style which is designed to only pump when needed. Having air in the line will not due the pump any good.

: First off you need a little product facts about your 1010 1st: Your tractor has dry expandable disk type brakes. 2nd: Your hydraulic system is an open center system. 3rd: Either oil will work, but Hygaurd would be better. At the time 1010 was built there was no such thing as HyGaurd thats why the oweners manuals recomended motor oil. HyGaurd does have less foaming charector to it. The noise you are hereing is air in the system, It may go away if it does not I suggest that you clean the Hyd. filter it is a mesh type that you can wash out.
3010, 4010 and 5010 tractors have wet disk brakes as well as closed center hyd. systems. 2010's have the same system as 1010's. Trust me I have worked for dealers for over 20 years.

Today's Featured Article - Talk of the Town: The Saga of Grandpa's Tractor - by The following saga is from the Tractor Talk Discussion Forum. Someone. The saga starts with the following message: Hey guys I have a decision to make. I know what you all will probably suggest and it will probably agree with me way down inside, but here it is. I have a picture blown up and framed in my "tractor room" of a Farmall M. It was my Grandpa's tractor, of which whom I never got to meet. He froze to death getting this tractor out of the barn to pull a truck out of the ditch before I was born. Anyway my dad and aunt had to sell it at the auction, ... [Read Article]
