Consider yourself lucky to have gotten the breaks that you did. There are very few places in the USA that give full property tax exemptions to the aged and/or disabled.

Many States leave it up to the individual towns to give exemptions, IF they want to.

Here in NY -
Local governments and school districts in New York State can opt to grant a reduction on the amount of property taxes paid by qualifying persons with disabilities.

To qualify, persons with disabilities generally must have certain documented evidence of their disability and meet certain income limitations and other requirements.

The basic exemption is a 50% reduction in the assessed value of the legal residence of the qualifying disabled person. For the basic exemption, the law allows each county, city, town, village, or school district to set the maximum income limit at any figure between $3,000 and $29,000.

I'm over 60, disabled, only have social security for steady income. My wife has been out of work for 4 years. We pay property and school taxes at five different places and two states. We also pay for my wife's and little kid's health insurance out-of-pocket. I pretty much do the same for all my doctor visits since I've got a $50 "co-pay." If it gets to a point we can't afford the school and property taxes - we'll sell some property. Sadly nobody in the USA actually owns property. We lease it since if we fail to pay taxes, it is taken from us.
