The old Deere was the most efficient for a period of time. In modern tractors the Ford 8870 was most efficient for a period of time through the mid-late 90's. It's record has more recently been bested slightly by an 8000 series Deere IIRC... but they're so close that the Ford I think still bests it at certain loads/speeds. I'd have to go back and check the stats. They are very close tho. Both are hovering on the 20 hp-hr/gal mark. That's far better than the 2 lung Deere ever dreamed of.
