This following statement is wrong, tho it sounds good it is totally wrong, bad math, a slight of hand with the words to make you forget math:

At this moment, each man was out $9 _total on the room AND tip_, not just _on the room_. And tht is what sets up the error....
Three x 9 = $27 which is the total they spent. MINUS the $2 tip, leaves the $25 the room cost.
The story is false, it is trying to say:
You start with 27 spent on the room (not true!) and add the $2 tip to this (why? The tip is already part of the $27?) to come up with $29 - which is a meaningless number. It looks good in English because they use words to preform a slight of hand, but is not mathamatically correct.
The words are trying to say 27 equals 27 plus 2 - and that is a false statement.
Or another way, the words are trying to say the cost of the room and tip is equal to the cost of the room and tip plus the tip - which is nonesensical to count the tip twice.
