The preparation for painting and having other things in order (roof, gutters and flashing) will have more to do with the longevity of your paint job. Dad and I did the back of grocery store for a friend of the family. This was the third paint job in three years. We came in from Michigan to do this job in Illinois. We cleaned the gutters and fixed some flashing so the water wasn't running down the wall and getting behind the paint. We spent more time scraping than the previous "painter" did on the whole job and then we rolled it mostly because we didn't have an airless available. That was the last time the store was painted as Tom closed it 10 years later and the new owners knocked it down to build a strip mall. We picked up the furnace and some other equipment before it was demolished and the back still looked good.
