Rick- Yes oil can be tested. I headed up the API yearly oil audit program around the world for more years than I care to admit. We retrieved worldwide samples for quality testing. In order to use the API logos, you must license your oil with them. The goal of the gathering was to randomly test 1000 oils from all over the world. Oils that failed testing were then targeted for legal action. Oh well, to make a long story short; engine oils, hydraulic oils and gear oils are all pretty much in adherence to what they say they are. In todays world though the testing has been cut way back, so I would suspect that there may be some shaky oils out there. By and large the key concerns, with the Hytran type oils is the particulate size of the additive packs used. The servo valves used in the tansmissions today have very small passage ways that are sensitive to additives above a certain micron size. In todays blending world large blending operation , buy bulk oils and use common additive to make a whole array of oils. They simple change the bottle and the label.
