With proper care the old K series Kohler engines should be good for 3000+ hours, I personally have had them to 2200-2400 hours and performing as new ( I changed jobs, the guy that took over for me said it died at 3,000). What is the rest of the machine look like? I'm dealing with our church's Craftsman with not nearly as many hours and the steering parts will cost us as much as the darn thing is worth. What does the deck look like? If you grab a blade is their any play in the spindles? What do the belts look like? Any rust or holes on the deck? Look for input from people more familiar with JD's, they make some stuff that is good that I would expect to run 3,000 hours, they make other stuff that's not much better than an MTD and I would pass at 1,800 hours cause it's worn out like our Church's mower-engine good rest not so good.
