For second year in a row, the Verona MO 4-H robotics team goes to the International Finals, in St. Louis, in a few weeks. Last year they were rookies, and still went to the finals. This year they also qualified at the Kansas City regional championships at Kemper Arena. THis years robot (remote-radio-controlled, battery-power, 4 servo-motors) had to drive down-court, scoop up basketballs, maneuver, shoot bakets, in the midst of 5 other robot competitors. During the last 15 seconds, the 'bot had to run over to mid-court to a balance beam, tip it down, climb up, and balance back and forth. They actually didn't shoot all that well, but their balancing technique was great. They were selected to accompany one winning team, to the finals. My two sons are on the team. Younger son John is the team mascot, walks around in a big silvery home-made drill bit, handing out free drill bits. Son Andrew is the shooter. The kids worked hard, built the 'bot over the winter, 3 or 4 nights a week, in the Marionville MO library community room. I'll try to put up pictures, but I'm not good at it. Go to www.frc3784.com. (They are team number 3784, in the First Robitics Competition.) The finals in St. Louis will be truly international, with teams from Europe, Israel, Australia, Asia, all over the world. Just to reassure you guys, John's favorite thing is to drive the Farmall H around the farm.
