Did all of the old Deeres put out the same belt speed? A couple of years ago we took a styled D off of a thresher and put a Deere R on the belt. The R couldn't be run wide open like the D was or the separator would have been over sped. You might be able to find the right sized belt pulley for the M to match it up.
Not to hijack the post, but this reminds me of a story dad told. He was working for a farmer pitching bundles back in the early 40's. The tractor on the separator was some big old Hart Paar or something like it. The big old tractor quit running so the farmer dad was working for offered to put his new M Farmall on the belt. The owner of the machine said the M wouldn't be able to run it but they still put the M on. Dad said the M purred along just fine and handled the separator with ease.
