Fall is just around the corner and we are under way harvesting.
Welcome to corn harvest at Farmington IL.
We started picking corn right where we left of chopping silage. I had plans to start on monday but it was finally wednesday morning when we finally got started. You know how best laid plans work out?
With cliff on a fishing trip in wisconsin nick got harvest underway with little fanfare on a drizzly wednesday morning followed with later day sunshine. This is our 11th harvest with this combine.
Normally wrigley helps me haul wagons but once in awhile I let him ride in the combine. He would really like to drive but he makes nick a little nervous when he puts his paws on the wheel!
This is what we work all year for. Golden waves of grain harvested from acre after acre of prarie soils. In central IL, corn is king. We are continuously growing more and more corn as demand, domestically and world wide grows by leaps and bounds.
How did we farm without cell phones? Right now this is my office. I will run the entire farm operation for about a month from whatever spot I am in at that moment. I can keep everything operating smoothly in the whole operation and never stop helping in the field. I left the house at 6:30am saturday, I walked back in this mornig at 1am. That doesnt give alot of time to do anything else. Not a normal day by any means but they happen.
This is one of our five drying bins. We move around almost daily filling and emptying bins almost non stop it seems. As far as the crop we are seeing about everything. Moisture from 16-26 and yields from 120 to 250. Have seen wide variations because of different hybrids, moreso than normal. Grain quality seem good but stalk quality is bad to worse.
I have lots of help. This is Travis hard at work studing what appears to the local weekly paper while he waits for his turn to haul a load to the bin site. Meanwhile I was listening to the cubs game and catching loads on the go and taking pictures of course. FYI, kruser, the next time travis tells you he is working hard on the farm, well you get the idea.
Wrigley gets wore out too. Here he is catching a nap in between loads of corn. He is totally beat after that long day yesterday. When we got in last night he went straight up stairs and curled up and went to sleep. He is sleeping under my feet now. This is fun time, we stay very busy but we try to enjoy ourselves as much as possible. Its hard at times. Worry about crop conditions, variable yields, trying to get next years inputs purchased allready, keeping everything moving, and of course we have cattle in pastures that dont have alot of grass and the creeks are getting pretty slow. Real rest will be at a premium for awhile now. When we are done there will be a collective sigh of release from each of us as we then prepare to move the cows home and get ready for winter.
