OK, there's no way you cranked it backwards. Since it's a diesel, the problem must be fuel-related, unless the tractor has glow plugs (which I assume you would have already checked). The only common point between the electrical system and fuel system should be the fuel cutoff solenoid, so that's where I'd look. Like Offandgone said, there might be a diode in parallel with the solenoid. If so that diode is probably blown along with the switch or relay that activates the fuel solenoid.
