Several years ago we had a dog which was kept outside. In hot weather he would go swim across the small pond behind the house and come back and lay down under a large bush. When he got uncomfortable again, he would repeat the process. My daughter now has a doberman-mix that stays in the house, and to be honest, I had never thought about it, but when an animal is used to air conditioning, heat affects them just like it does humans. Here in central N.C. the heat index is expected to top 100 today. Bubba will go out to . use the bathroom, but he does not want to play ball. After about five minutes he is ready to go back into the house.
