Good idea to do it when you change the fluid.
Drain it when its hot. Leave drain plug out, and do the flushing into a catch pan. I have a gallon jug with a piece of tubing adapted to the cap- fill with diesel, kerosene, mineral spirits, whatever you want- Stick the tube into the fill hole, and you can direct it around the case like a little hose, instead of just dumping it in and having it all go straight down. Decant from the catch pan back into the jug, and repeat. Its not as good as taking the top cover off, but you'll get most of the crud.
