I'm not sure when they started doing this, as that tractor may be prior to or shortly after the merger, but Caterpillar used to stamp the number under where the data/serial number plate is attached, possibly something under there if you clean carefully. These had larger brass, patent plates on them too, but you are looking for s/n, if nothing else I'm not sure if any major components have casting codes on them, there was a way to decipher those, but might be later production, serial number tags were usually in 2 places/2 plates on later tractors, engine and final drive housing on the back, lower left.
