Mike, I wish I knew because I have the same problem. It sounds as though Lee was lucky. I have studied this problem a little and found that the steering sector is usually the problem due to plain old wear. The worm on the shaft works on one area of the sector until the sector is a loose fit in the worm gear , thus the play. No one ( IH or after market ) makes a new sector so unless you can find a low hour junk tractor there aren't many options. If you want to spend lots of money you could take the sector to a good machine shop and have it built up by flame-spraying new metal on the teeth . It would then need to machined to the origional gear specs. If you come up with a solution I hope you will let the rest of in on it. Just a note: I have fixed the same problem on a Cub which as you probably know is similar in design. The difference in the Cub steering is that instead of a sector the Cub has a full diameter gear which allows you to remove the gear and rotate it on a spline placing an unused area of the gear in the area of contact of the worm . Problem solved!!
