I think you are going to find that the wires had a diode at this point. The diode prevents the juice going back into the alternator windings when the engine is stopped. It would probably charge OK and be OK if the battery cable were disconnected when the engine is stopped. I think you should find a wiring schematic though to be sure so that you don't burn up the alternator windings if the wires should not be tied together. Some of these engines also have a voltage regulator. It will be a flat thingy with about five wires connecting to it. I will check my old 15 HP Kohler tomorrow but am pretty sure that it has a voltage regulator eternally mounted at the engine cover usually.
