Sounds like it could be lack of valve clearance. Soon as it cools down slightly it gets compression and will run. When you play with the choke you get a richer mixture which cools the engine. Static compression test will be ok. Backfire as thru the induction system = no valve clearance. jmho and experience with those symptoms on a Kohler in an IH Cub Cadet 122 ray
