The oil pans with three drains is the older type. After 10 hrs of operation drain to larger and refill to upper.(per operators manual). Kerosene was fuel used and it didn't all burn thereby going past rings and diluting the oil. It would rise to top of oil and enable draining off. As distillate came into use the oil pans began using only two for low and hi ck.(about 1937) I asume oil dilution was not as much a problem with distillate. Charlie commented on the extra lubrication for rocker arm. The oil added through top of valve cover is the only lubrication it will ever get and requires 1/6 quanity of oil can added daily. I have never seen an original oil can to determine exact amount but would guess a table spoon in each hole would wet the wicks. ED.
