Dan,

When I put my chains on I take them in the middle and put them on the top of the tire letting the weight of the chains help take out the slack. Then I hook the inside as tight as I can, move tractor ahead or back so the connection is about half way up the tire to finish making my latching which may include tightening up the inside more. Then I drive it around a little and tighten again as they tend to loosen due to seeking their place. Some people let the air out of the tires, hook the chains and then reinflate to get them tight. This is ok unless you have fluid in them such as I do.

Another thing I do is cut up old intertubes into about 2 to 3 inch wide stripes to put on the sides to hold the chains tight. For hooks on the intertube straps is I get some extra links like are used for hooking the cross chains to the side chains.

Hope this gives you some ideas.
