Hey Red Dave - I was having D-17's foul in both my SH and SM only after an hour or two of running in cold weather. Since replacing with D-21's I've accumulated over 200 hours in two years on each tractor - haven't had to pull a D-21 plug yet. Champion catalogs a D-23 (hotter than a D-21). Haven't found anyplace that stocks them...but I haven't looked very hard either. What happens if you put in a plug that too hot? Dieseling - motor knocking and running on after you kill the ignition is the most common result. May also get pinging or knocking under heavy load, and electrode damage (burning off the center electrode resulting in misfiring) after a few hours of running. Not likely to be a problem on a low-compression Farmall engine, except possibly for extended operation at full power/RPM. I wouldn't be too concerned...
