The reason we have 12 volt electrical systems in cars today, instead of 6 volt, is you can deliver the same wattage with lighter (read cheaper) wires, generating equipment, and smaller batteries. The talk of going to 42 volts is about being able to run your AC, PS, cooling fan, water pump and other power using accessories using electric instead of a belt. This will save fuel because the accessory will only be turn on when needed. Starting was never the reason for the change, power demand and cost cutting was what caused the change.
