Looks like the coil went bad and someone just made good use of the coil tower on the mag cap. With the external coil and condensor, you just use the points and the distributor rotor and cap. We used to call that "field expedient". I've done that with an H4 mag, and a Wico C mag on a JD A. Funny, sometimes the internal coil will get wet from sitting, and not fire, and after running one this way for a while, the engine heat will bake the coil out and it will work again. JMHO, Karl.
