I had a simular problem with a M. Another guy put 12 volt system on because he couldn't get 6 volt system to work. 12 was no better. I found that the ampmeter was grounding out and draining the power. On a 300 that I put a one wire set-up on I put a relay in the charging system. A relay is just an electrically operated switch. You wire the coil to the ignition switch and one of the normally open contacts to the output wire. When the switch is turned off you are disconnecting the alternator from the battery. The relay I used has a 12 volt coil with a 70 amp rating for the contact. This is more than plenty for a tractor( they draw around 30 max with halogen lights). It seems this relay cost about $8.00.
