I have looked into this a little as I have always wanted an M with a V8. My plan is for an IH V8. It is my understanding that a 304 or 345 will fit between the frame rails and bolt up easily. Low RPMs can use stock tractor flywheel if its in good shape, higher RPMs will require new flywheel be made.
You see a lot of them with Chevy 350s as I think they also fit between the frame rails and are a fairly good fit. With a little engineering and fabrication ability, anything could be adapted. Keep us posted on your progress when you get started on something!
