Finally got a chance to look at tractor. Drained the oil, no water (thank goodness). Removed carb, took apart, everything looked good, cleaned, reinstalled. Took fuel pump out. Removed top (low pressure side) cover, looked like been at the bottom of the ocean. Lot of gritty stuff and some rust. Removed bottom section, little bit of grit mostly clean. Hit the diaphragm with pressure from carb cleaner can, couldn't see any leaks. reinstalled.
Tired to start tractor up. Wouldn't start at first. Then would start with heavy chock, black smoke coming out exhaust, engine runs for about 30 sec and stalls out. Repeated a few times drained battery.
Couple of questions:
1) put 7 QT of oil in engine. Dipstick reads way to high. Assume dipstick is wrong (could be no original to tractor). Confirm 7 QT is the correct amount to put in.
2) manually pressed level on fuel pump and fuel came out. Is this enough of a test to verify correctly working fuel pump. Should I look at anything else. With all the crude in there (cleaned out) should I replace anyways, replaced in 2002. Was damaged with bought tractor. Inside of my fuel tank heavy rust. Have filter on my shut off and inline fuel filter (obviously not enough), what kind of filter do I need to add to keep gunk out of my fuel pump?
3) Am I missing anything. Should I just change out the plugs (usually fixes my problems) and see if it will run?
