Awhile back I posted asking if anybody knew which adapter could be used to install a custom steering wheel on a International Harvester 2500B / 574 tractor. I did not get any reply's so I spent a couple of weeks reading and searching the internet. Finally I came on a old post discussing putting a custom steering wheel on an old IH truck, the original poster measured his steering column spindle and it was 7/8 with 36 splines The same as the IH tractor.

He had used a Grant 4405 steering wheel adapter kit on his truck and it worked. As the steering wheel on my tractor was already in bad shape and the splines were mostly striped out I was looking for a new steering wheel but I wanted something smaller then the OEM 16 inch wheel. I have issues with knees and ankles so getting a little more room for getting on and off the tractor would be a big help, and with Hydro-static steering I don't feel I need a 16 inch wheel. Well a couple of weeks ago I went ahead and ordered a Grant 4405 adapter kit and a Grant 338, 13.5 inch steering wheel and dived in!.

It worked well and the install was straight forward and I am very happy with the results.

So someone else can benefit from my research....

The OEM Steering Wheel Part number is 385156R1 or 17041010

The specs are 16" Diameter 7/8" shaft, 36 Splines.

This is specked.. to fit these tractors: Hydro 70, Hydro 84, Hydro 86, Hydro 100, Hydro 186, Hydro 3488, 404, 424, 444, 454, 464, 484, 504, 544, 574, 584, 606, 656, 664, 666, 674, 684, 686, 706, 756, 766, 784, 786, 806, 826, 856, 884, 886, 966, 986, 1026, 1066, 1086, 1206, 1256, 1456, 1466, 1468, 1486, 1566, 1568, 1586, 2400, 2500, 3088, 3220, 3230, 3288, 3388, 3588, 3688, 3788, 4386, 4586, 4786, 5088, 5288, 5488, 6388, 6588, 6788.

Now please remember "Your Mileage May Vary" you need to check whatever tractor you are working on, the steering shaft should be 7/8 inch dia with 36 splines.

A Grant 4405 adapter should fit any of the above tractors and allow you to use any Grant or Grant pattern steering wheel.

Installing the steering wheel on the IH2500B /574. I had to use a open end wrench to tighten the spindle nut, The long bolts are keeping the wheel bolt holes aligned while I tighten the spindle nut.

Installing the custom steering wheel on the IH2500B /574. Two of the steering wheel bolts are installed. , note when the steering wheel bolts are installed they so close that they will keep the Spindle nut from turning loose.

Steering wheel size difference. The Grant 338 wheel at 13.5 inches and the original IH 16" inch steering wheel.

The Finished install...... It works well and looks good.

Overall I am happy with the new steering wheel, there is no difference in the steering feel, I may install a wheel spinner on this. The only bad point is the 13.5 inch wheel does block the direct drivers view to some of the dash gauges so you need to lean in a bit to see the full gauge face.

as an aside... The center beauty cap would not stay on, so I used some black silicone under the edges of the cap to glue it down to the wheel.

Hope this helps some

Andrew

Today's Featured Article - Box Plow Blues - by Tom Schwarz. One of the first implements most tractor owners obtain is the box plow. For very little money, this piece of equipment promises to plow and flatten any hill or vale on your ranch road or farm. At least that's what I thought! As simple as a box plow appears, it can be rather challenging to make work correctly. In our sandy soils of Florida, traction is king. You can never have wide enough tires or heavy enough weights to get all the traction you want … unless you own a monster tractor. U ... [Read Article]
