I had another thead about this but it got a bit sidetracked.
If the head studs or nuts are not in good shape, they won't torque correctly and clamp the head down right. There are a few problems with the head studs on my A that has me concerned they could be part of my head gasket problem.
1. one of the the studs is different from the others and seems to be a replacement stud. This one stud is shorter than the other 8 studs and has a different finish on it (different color) than the rest.
2. With the head nuts that go on the studs, two of the nuts had slightly damaged threading and could not be finger tighten, the other 7 nuts could be easily tighten down by finger. I already replaced the two bad nuts but should I replace the other 7 nuts as well to be safe?
If you ran into any of these two problems with your motor, would you replace the whole set of head studs and nuts?
3. on 113 engines, do the head studs screw into the water jackets and require thread sealant to prevent coolant seepage and head gasket damage like with small block Chevys?
Thanks.
