Was hearing noise in the transmission on the H as I was baling hay. Would want to pop out of gear in Second. Tore down the transmission and found the pilot bearing on the main shaft in the transmission pretty gone. The outer race was missing and the roller bearings missing. Ordered a new pilot bearing form IH and the remaining three bearings on the main shaft from the local bearing shop. The question that I had is what holds the pilot bearing in place. I found a short bolt in the end of the main shaft where the pilot bearing is. There was no washer there that might hold the bearing in place. Why is the bolt in the end of the main shaft? I have a shop manual from I&T Shop Service that shows the side view of the transmission but not enough detail to know how that goes together. Hoping an experienced H mechanic would know the answer.
