Ok guys, little update here on my aunts tractor.
First off, sorry for the long post! As you
remember she told me it was fouling the plugs,
hard to start and running rough. Compression was
130, 122, 140, 125. Did not smoke at all, block is
covered in oil on right side, and wet under
manifold around number 3 cylinder.

Yesterday I put some new Autolite 3116 plugs in,
changed the oil, adjusted the valves, put SeaFoam
in both gas and oil, and tried to adjust the carb
before taking it out and plowing (trying to loosen
a possibly stuck oil ring). Plowing went ok, only
went for about 1/2hr before the temp gauge spiked
up into the HOT range so I quit. Can only get full
power usually with the choke set most of the way,
so I know a carb rebuild in definitely in order!
While out there though, I noticed almost a
whistling sound coming from the engine...as best I
could tell, it was coming from that number 3
cylinder. Never heard anything like it before.
Ideas??

Lastly, after I got it real hot and went to shut
it down, it was dieseling and then backfired
through the intake and coughed up a bunch of smoke
and pushed probably 1/2" oil up into the mason
jar. Last night my aunt told me that has been
happening to her too. Is that timing related or
more carb issues? I did not open up the magneto or
adjust timing yet as it has an American Bosch
magneto that I am not familiar with on an M. Ideas
here??

Thanks for the help!!

First two pictures are of all the oil, second two
are just general after a good bath!

Today's Featured Article - New Life for an Old Allis - by Tyler Woods. My friend Jon, has an old '39 Allis Chalmers B. He thought it a marginal tractor that had long since served its time. She smoked terribly and never had much power but he couldn't afford another so he was limping along with what he had. Jon's Allis has a small front loader and though it doesn't carry much, it serves his needs. It was the hard starting and low power that made him think it was time to replace the old girl. Jon called me to help him discover why his tractor wouldn't start ... [Read Article]
