It never hurts to have the serial number for the tractor, because sometimes there are serial number breaks where major changes are made, and you can end up with the wrong part that will never fit.
The serial number should be on a shiny silver tag somewhere on the tractor. On IH farm tractors of that era, the tag is generally on the bell housing of the transmission, clearly visible.
Unfortunately, there is no other place on the tractor where the serial number might be. If the tag is unreadable or missing, you're out of luck for the original serial number.
Year can be determined by looking for casting codes. These will be a sequence of numbers and a letter CAST (not stamped) into the major castings such as the engine block, bell housing, transmission housing, etc..
It will be DD-MM-Y, day-month-year.
Year is a letter code. It starts with A in 1954. By my calculations:
K = 1963
L = 1964
M = 1965
N = 1966
O = 1967
The casting codes will probably not all be from the same date. The actual assembly date of the tractor will be some time AFTER the latest casting code date, sometimes 3-4 months after.
