When tryen to remove the range cove firts ya have to know is what kind of park loc ya have . The org. one was and over center deal and this one is not tomuch a hassle . But some have been changed to the updated one that has a HEAY spring park loc. , this one is way better for holding the tractor and when you start to work on one with the updated park lock the way you can tell is this one does not have and adjustable turn buckle just a solid rod from the park loc linkage to the range cove linkage . So before you start taking pieces and parts off you must first unlock the park loc and i use the head of a 1/2 bolt and stuff the head of the bolt under the linkage that lifts the rod UP and it hold the park loc disengaged as it needs to be held up 3/4 of and inch. Then ya remove all the pieces and parts and bolts . Then i use TWO still bladed putty knifes to break the seal at opposites corners and then use the pry bars. But one other thing here ya also need to remove the cover off the left side of the rearend the one behind the left step as the rev. shift rod and rev. shift fork is behind this cover and when you pull the top cover the rev. shift fork will fall over and then you will NEVER EVER GET THE COVER BACK ON . When you remove this cover IF the transmission fluid level is wright at the full mark you will loose about one gallon of oil so put a pan down . IF it is over full then you will loose a lot more. Last year i was working on a 1086 with a shifting problem in the range transmission and this was a first for me not on fixing a shifting problem but that top cover refused to come off . told the guy that this was a three to three and a half hour job I work slow. Well here on this tractor the big pin that the park dwag rides on had worked out over half way and it was hitting on the lip on the back side of the housing , it would come up about 3/4 of and inch and it would not go any higher . I could not move the cover forward anymore with out taking the whole tractor apart and i had to build and design a toll that would slip thru the space i had make bends in it and make a wedge to drive between the pin and the back of the transmission case and force the pin back into it's bore so that we could lift the cover off . Nine and a half hours later the job was done and i was out of there. So before ya get carried away back up and read what i have told ya . Ya got to get the side cover off First and make sure the park loc is UP Then if it does not want to come up past 3/4 of and inch Get a light and start looking . If it is a spring loaded park lock and it is not blocked up 3/4 of and inch it can and will eat you. And since this is you first rodeo get and extra set of hands to help.
