Our experience of 25 years is leave it 12 volt as you will be using in some cold weather. Check over that ring gear real good as there may be at least one flat spot where the teeth are worn. Check the starter to see if it turns good and if it does just put a new bendix drive on. If you leave it twelve volt don't run the starter very long, however you probably won't have to as the M will start eaiser the faster it turns. Ralph
