Hi, the transmission shift pattern determines if it is an early or late model 684. Both models have two transmissions a 4 speed, speed transmission and range transmission with Rev/Lo/Hi with one lever for each transmission. The only difference is the shift patterns. This gives 8F and 4Rev speeds as every speed transmission gear has Rev, Low and High speeds. The older models use a linear shift pattern. Speed transmission lever is 1-2-3-4 with 1 being at the rear with notches in the sheet metal guide. The range transmission is Rev at rear Neutral and Low straight down, High is down and towards the drivers seat.
Newer shift pattern for speed transmission is H pattern with 1-3 at rear and 2-4 forward, Range transmission long lever is Rev to the rear, Neutral middle, Low straight forward, High to drivers seat and forward.
There also maybe a T/A on the dash on left of steering column, looks like throttle control lever, forward is High (Direct Drive), towards drivers seat is Low. The T/A gives a shift on the go for every gear giving 16F and 8Rev speeds.
Caution DO NOT pull T/A into Low will going down hill with a load behind tractor, also DO NOT pull T/A into Low while in 3rd or 4th High range with heavy load behind tractor. Shift T/A rapidly.

Hope this helps
JimB

Today's Featured Article - Choosin, Mounting and Using a Bush Hog Type Mower - by Francis Robinson. Looking around at my new neighbors, most of whom are city raised and have recently acquired their first mini-farms of five to fifteen acres and also from reading questions ask at various discussion sites on the web it is frighteningly apparent that a great many guys (and a few gals) are learning by trial and error and mostly error how to use a very dangerous piece of farm equipment. It is also very apparent that these folks are getting a lot of very poor and often very dangerous advice fro ... [Read Article]
