The 666 will have a C291 gas engine in it, rated at 65 PTO HP. They were built from 1972-76. The 666/686 are very good tractors, and they seem to bring a premium price, at least here in Missouri. A gas model would probably bring less than a diesel.

706's are older (1963-67) and somewhat larger and heavier (probably about 1000lb heavier, on average.) 706's can usually be bought for less money than 666/686's, but are harder to find in good condition - probably due to the age difference. The 666 will have a single speed PTO (probably 540 RPM), and mechanical brakes and T/A. The 706 will have both the 540 and 1000 RPM PTO shafts, and hydraulic brakes and T/A. The 706 is rated about 75 PTO HP (actual number depends on engine.) The other main difference is the transmission. The 666 will have a 5F/1R, or 10F/2R with T/A. The 706 will have 8F/4R, or 16F/8R with T/A.

I have a '64 706D, and my dad has a '71 544G (basically a 4 cylinder version of the 656/666/686.) They are both very good machines. I would say the 544 is a little easier to live with as a "chore tractor" and the 706 is a little easier to live with as a "field tractor". The 666G might be a good compromise.

Today's Featured Article - Choosin, Mounting and Using a Bush Hog Type Mower - by Francis Robinson. Looking around at my new neighbors, most of whom are city raised and have recently acquired their first mini-farms of five to fifteen acres and also from reading questions ask at various discussion sites on the web it is frighteningly apparent that a great many guys (and a few gals) are learning by trial and error and mostly error how to use a very dangerous piece of farm equipment. It is also very apparent that these folks are getting a lot of very poor and often very dangerous advice fro ... [Read Article]
