It wasn't until alternators came around that negative ground became universally applied. A buddy of mine has a a JD 50 and 60, and an Oliver 770(?) gas with factory 12 volt, all positive gnd. He also has an electric start JD 840 (24 volt) that's wired "split ground". It'g got (4) 6 volt batteries connected in series with the connection between the #2 and #3 batteries grounded. This provides 12 volts to ground for lighting etc. So it's BOTH positive and negative ground, depending on where in the system you tap 12 volts.
