Bob, I finally found a 200ma light at Radio Shack. Installed it, ran #10 wire to ammeter from alt, switched around the wires on ammeter, and finished wiring the lights. I fired it up, but still the warning light stayed on. Lights work and show discharge when I turn them on. Still no charge while motor is running. So I tried the test the other gentleman suggested (holding screwdriver near pulley) but it didn't seem to be working. Then it dawned on me. Since our Massey is tore down right now (engine overhaul, long story) I took the alternator off it, since I wired it up this past summer and knew it worked. Hooked it up to "old red" and fired it up. Amazing. The light went out and the ammeter showed charge. So it was a bad alt. Well, I thought it was done, but I was wrong. It died. Thought that maybe I forgot to turn the gas on, but it was. Now it won't start or hit even once. What happened? Could the points be the problem now after I"m sending 12 volts to them? Besides loose connections on all ignition wiring, what else should I check? Can the ignition switch (kill switch, I call it) handle 12 volts? I must say you are excellent at diagnosing problems when you are not there with the tractor.
