A old friend of mine that past away a few years ago said that when IH came out with the 400 that they finally got it right. He bought 4 of them. 2 diesel and 2 gas. I have one of the gas tractors and did an out of frame overhaul on it about 10 years ago. This is after the tractor sat in the grove for about 15 years. I plow about 20 to 40 acres a year with it, mow, rake and bale about 2000 bales of hay a year, and a neighbor used it to pull a six row 7000 JD planter and planted about 300 acres a year with it for the last two years. I also put a loader on it in the winter and keep my place free of snow here in north Iowa. I haven’t done anything to the tractor except change oil and put a new regulator on it since then. I am going to have to spilt it and put a new TA in it. The TA is not bad just the overriding clutch in it and it was starting to go out of it when I got it running, but since I going to have it apart I’m going to go all the way. I have 4 1/8 high dome pistons in it witch makes it a little hard to start in the winter (so I have heater on it,) and it sometimes wants to diesel when you shut it down when its hot. But it’s got lots of power and it handles 3-16 fast hitch plow just fine in this Black dirt. (I have never seen dirt that plows as hard as this ground. I plow the same speed as my neighbor does with his 5020 pulling 5-16s) I also pull a 14' wheel disk and a 12' field cultivator with no trouble. If you are going to go Red!!!
