Intake just starting to open and exhaust just finishing closing. I have seen them engines keep running with a broken crankshaft, but if it depends on where it breaks to determine if it will remain in time or not. You could have a sheared key on injection pump drive but I doubt if you would hear any noise. With starter removed you can rotate engine back and forth to tell if all components are moving in sync.
