Most of the time I was there they had 3500 employees. They made less & bought more then back in the 40's & 50's. By the late 70's most employees had no agricultural "roots" to appreciate the work these tractors were expected to do. The plant in about 1981 condition was almost 2 million sq. feet under roof, Largest gear & shaft machining facility in the industry, and the assembly line was I believe the longest in the country, about 2 miles if you include the repair loop joining the Start and Finish assembly lines. The Engine line, where engines from the Melrose Park, IL plant were trimmed out with Alternators, A/C compressors, fans, etc. is included in the 2 mile figure. We built 125 of the 786,886,986,1086,1486,& 1586 models per day. Had built up to 175 when I started, The '86 series was just imtroduced & selling well. We also made up to 42 of the 2X2 articulated tractors. The 686 & Hydro 86 and the 4186 were also built there during the time I worked there. To say it was a Great Place to Work is a REAL Understatement. The building still stands but is mostly un-used. All the machine tools were moved to the Case/IH plant in Racine WI. I read in the paper this morning that Case-New Holland is negociating whether to close it or keep it open with the Union. I think it was a mis-print but mentioned something about the plant employing 218 people? I think the paper meant 1218. The fate of This plant has been a topic of discussion on this forum about 2 weeks ago.
