Having had a rather rude encounter with the seasonal IPTO disconnect feature on my "new" 300U this weekend, it might be of interest to others to share my experience. I was out with the bushhog Saturday hacking away at the three-foot high stuff that turns into tumbleweed when the PTO abruptly stopped working. After a certain amount of dithering, poking, etc. and the associated strong language, the problem was tentatively identified as the seasonal disconnect, whose shift lever was now obviously too far forward, and couldn't be placed in the engaged position. A look in the operator's manual revealed that there was supposed to be a bolt holding the lever in the engaged position - from the amount of crud in the bolt hole, the individual who owned this beast before me obviously thought this was optional. Apparently the weeds had yanked this lever back while the tractor was moving along and the PTO drive train got disconnected while under power. After draining the transmission today (knew there was some reason I'd been putting it off) and pulling the plate I found I'd been fairly lucky for once - the little guide knob which moves the disconnect coupling back and forth had jumped out of its slot in the coupling and was now holding the coupling in the disconnected position. Appears as though the shift linkage may have been rotated a bit also, so I'll have to try to line it up a bit better. Ended up not too bad considering how things must have banged around in there. Moral of the story is if you have one of these things, check and make sure the locking bolt is in place and tight. Having this thing pop out when under load like I did is a really good way to end up with a broken PTO shaft or coupling for no good reason. This disconnect appears to be one of those ideas that sounded good, but turned out to be more trouble than it was worth. If you think about it, the amount of wear on an unloaded gear train is not going to be that significant. According to my parts book IH discontinued the IPTO seasonal disconnect on the 300U after serial #22985. I would imagine the same was true on the 300 and 400 also, but don't know for sure. Maybe this will help someone avoid a potentially serious breakdown, or just the good scare and royal PITA I experienced.
