I suggest you do a real personal touch here; do not just call him. Call and tell him you would like to visit with him for a few minutes in person and ask when it would be convenient for him to do so. If he asks "what about?", just tell him you will explain when you get there.
Then drive over and explain the whole thing, plus you get to look the tractor over real good. When he sees your grin and your eyes light up he will appreciate your feelings very clearly. Walk around the tractor, maybe even sit on it, etc. Let him see your love of that tractor. I"m sure he will give you first chance at buying it some day....or he might just give you a shot then and there because of your sincerity and thoughtfulness.
If you strike out today, then nicely tell him to keep you in mind for the future and leave. You can always contact him in a year or so and try again.
You can"t beat a person-to-person conversation; much warmer than a phone call.
I"m a retired sales manager, just love those eye to eye conversations. E-mailing and texting are killing our communication skills, phones are not much better.
