Your '48 M should be wired up same as in the diagram above. (Thanks to Farmer Bob for scanning and sharing!)

The backward-reading ammeter is consistant with the battery being hooked up negative ground. If you swap the battery cables, the ammeter will again read correctly. But if you swap the ground, be sure to repolarize the generator also: Momentarily connect the BAT and GEN terminals on the cutout with a jumper wire before starting the engine.

If the charging system is properly connected and working properly, you should get the following test results:

1 - With engine off and lights on "B" (bright) ammeter should read somewhere around -15 amps.

2 - With engine idling the lights off, ammeter should read 0.

3 - With engine up to full RPM and light switch set on "H". Ammeter should read somewhere around +15 amps. If you have an accurate voltmeter, voltage across the battery terminals should be between 7.0 and 7.5.

4 - Again with engine at full RPM, but light switch on "L", ammeter should read about +5 amps.

Post back your findings and we'll try to help...

A couple other comments: The starter is polarity insensitive - it'll turn the right way grounded no matter which way it's grounded. If this tractor is a working (not a show) tractor and you want it to start reliably in MN winters, think about converting to 12 volts (either generator or alternator). You'll find starting will be MUCH more reliable in extreme cold with 12 volts.
