The startin and diein blues (Ken, look here!)

Last Memorial day I put a new sediment bowl gasket on. That seemed to fix my problems...
Saturday I went to start it, before I did I noticed the bowl was full of crap. I dumped the crap, drained the tank and flushed good.. Now when I put the bowl on and get it good and tight NO GAS COMES IN!!! It seems air bound.
If I drop or otherwise loosen the bowl, the gas comes in, but the bowl leaks.
If I loosen the line to the carb the bowl fills but the line leaks. Finally I let the bowl fill and then tightened it up. This seemed to work, but the tractor would run and then quit unless I kept it at half throttle where it would run fine, but wouldn't do any work. I could go to full throttle for about 2 minutes but then it would starve, drop back to half and all is okay. From the bowl I can see a big air bubble up around the screen which jiggles but neither breaks up or goes anywhere when the engine is running. Dad suggested that I pull the drain plug from the carb and see if the bubble would move. Unfortunately I ran out of time before I could try it.
If it doesn't snow too bad I get another chance at this in November. After that I'll have to wait for next Memorial Day at which time I intend to replace the whole bowl assembly since the metal of the assembly is deteriorating badly. Any ideas whats what here?
