It picks up the rubbish in the bottom of the tank as it empties because the rubbish sits near the bottom. The pickup sits slightly higher than the very base of the tank (or it should do). When the tank is very low, the surface of the fuel is close to the rubbish. The moving fuel and the little waves on the surface stir the silt up through what is left in the tank and allow it to flow into the fuel system. Leave the tractor sitting for a while and the silt settles back to the bottom of the tank. Often you can clean out the sediment bowl and all will appear well… until you get low on fuel again. Whenever one of our drivers runs a bus out of diesel (and they do) we make certain there is a spare fuel filter in the luggage bins to prevent the second break down, when the first one chokes up.
