Guy - I started in the shop in Oct. 1976 in a sub-assembly dept. right beside the assembly line spray booth. I did frt axle assembly. I worked in Mat'l Scheduling from 1-3-1979 till 12-11-81. The "Special Color" tractors went down the assembly line just like all the rest. In the case of the "Carrot" tractors IHC E.Moline even had to get involved due to the cabs. Tractors were only painted Once. They ran a special air line & gun into the booths. The biggest problem was all the bolt-on sheet metal, Hoods, steps, battery boxes, fenders, and the wheels, weights, & hubs for frt & dual wheels. They got painted on a separate line down around the west end of the plant. There were a couple other spray booths in the plant but nothing that would have been used for painting a whole tractor. Normally they ran as much in Batches as they could. Same way with Hi-Clears and Narrow Frt ends. The AFWD was an exception, They would run 1 or 2 a day as many days a week as it took to stay current with orders. During this time, it was the ELWOOD all wheel drive package.
