Charlie, there's been a lot of talk about these over the years. There was a gentleman here named Hugh MacKay (who since has passed away) who was very familiar with SA steering problems. I was able to find some of theses discussions by typing in 'Hugh MacKay- steering' in the search feature.

"Bob: If Steering shaft has not end to end movement the worm and bearings are fine. Castle nut can create the problem, but by the time that happens the woodruff key in the steering control arm is probably out of shape.
90% of these I've dealt with had nothing more wrong the the two woodruff keys on that vertical shaft, the one I mentioned in steering control arm and the one oin the half gear turned by the worm. Those keys alone can give 1.5 free turns on the steering wheel, if badly worn."

and...

"If the steering shaft has no end to end movement, I wouldn't touch that big plug. All you will correct by removing that is bearings on the shaft and if it has no movement the bearings are good.
If the bearings on the steering shaft are tight then your problem is woodruff keys on the vertical shaft that comes out bottom of steering box. The steering control arm is keyed to shaft and the gear inside is keyed to the same shaft. I have seen those two keys loose enough to give 1-1/2 turns of free travel on steering wheel. Only way to fix that is remover front axle, then bottom half of steering box. Usually the keyways require cutting larger and use larger keys."

Now, I'm not saying that this is your problem, but just some food for thought. I have an SA with the exact same problem, and I hope to tackle it this summer.
