SH in Ks said: (quoted from post at 20:23:40 05/30/12) I recently purchased a 53 super H and I later saw that it had a small patch bolted to the right bottom of the differential housing. The patch is 6-8 inches long and maybe 4 inches wide.
I know that sometimes a bearing can go out and the gear will push one of the balls through the housing.
Did IH ever make such a patch to cover such a hole? This patch is perfectly formed and looks too perfect to be home made.
If the owner took it to a metal fabrication shop, they could have rolled a patch to match the curve of the housing pretty easily.
On the other hand, never underestimate the ingenuity and craftsmanship of some of the older generation.
